Great Oldbury Little Learners

Great Oldbury Little Learners

Transitioning to Reception

The transition from Little Learners to Reception was so smooth for our child. The caring, highly skilled staff prepared them beautifully, and all the play based learning, well resourced classrooms, and time spent in the amazing outdoor space gave them such confidence. We always felt included through strong parent partnerships, and it made the whole journey feel positive and supported. Our daughter walked into school on their first day happy, ready, and excited — and we know Little Learners played a huge part in that."

Supporting a confident, happy start to school

At Little Learners, we know that starting Reception is a huge milestone for children and their families. Our transition programme is carefully designed to help every child feel secure, familiar and excited about their next step. Because our nursery is closely connected to the school, children benefit from a seamless, nurturing journey into Reception and beyond.

Strong links with the school

Children attending Little Learners have regular access to the wider school environment, helping them build confidence long before their first day. Throughout the year, children enjoy:

  • Visits to the Reception classrooms
  • Time exploring school spaces and resources
  • Dining in the school hall, learning routines and expectations
  • Joining weekly celebration assemblies
  • Taking part in whole school events such as Reindeers on the run, Mother’s Day celebrations, Lambs on the Loose and themed days.

These experiences help children feel part of the school community from the very beginning.

Staff who know them well

Teachers are a familiar face to the children at Little Learners and support staff reward effort and participation with stickers and visits to Early Years classrooms. This continuity helps children feel safe, supported and confident as they move into Reception.

A carefully planned transition programme

We offer a range of opportunities for children and families to get to know the Reception team, the classrooms and the routines:

  • Open days  - Families are invited to explore the school, meet staff and learn more about the Reception curriculum and environment.

  • Welcome meeting for new parents  - This informative session helps families understand what to expect, how to prepare and how we work together to support each child.

  • Stay and Play sessions  - Children attend stay and play sessions in the reception classrooms, both with parents and independently, helping them build familiarity and confidence.

  • Meet the teacher 1:1 meetings  - Every family is offered a home visit with their child’s new teacher. This is a valuable opportunity to share information, ask questions and begin building a strong partnership.

  • Enhanced transitions when needed  - We understand that some children may need a little extra support. For those who benefit from a more gradual or personalised approach, we offer enhanced transition plans, which may include additional visits, shorter settling sessions, extra time with key staff, laison with external professionals and other tailored support strategies.

Our aim is always to ensure every child feels secure, understood and ready for their next chapter.

A seamless journey from nursery to school

Because Little Learners is part of the wider school community, children experience a smooth, well supported transition. They arrive in Reception already familiar with the environment, routines, staff and expectations — and most importantly, they arrive feeling confident, excited and ready to learn.
